What is Yaesu WIRES-X?
Yaesu WIRES-X (Wide-coverage Internet Repeater Enhancement System) is a digital communication system developed by the Japanese radio manufacturer Yaesu. It allows amateur radio operators to connect their radios to repeaters and rooms around the world using the internet, greatly expanding the range of traditional radio communications.
WIRES-X operates using C4FM digital technology, also known as System Fusion. This system provides clear digital voice audio, data capability, and seamless integration with the internet. When a WIRES-X enabled radio connects to a compatible repeater or node, the operator can select different “rooms,” which function like virtual meeting spaces where hams from different locations can talk together.
A WIRES-X node is typically connected to a computer and internet connection. This node links a local repeater or radio to the global WIRES-X network. Once connected, users can access hundreds of rooms worldwide, allowing conversations between operators in different states or countries as if they were using the same repeater.
Many modern Yaesu radios support WIRES-X functionality, including popular models such as the Yaesu FT‑991A and Yaesu FTM‑400XDR. These radios include built-in digital capabilities that allow operators to easily connect to WIRES-X rooms through compatible repeaters.
One of the major advantages of WIRES-X is that it combines the reliability of local radio communication with the global reach of the internet. Operators can still use their handheld or mobile radios locally, while also having the ability to communicate worldwide through the linked network.
Overall, WIRES-X is a powerful tool in modern Amateur Radio, bringing together digital voice technology, repeaters, and internet connectivity to create a global community of radio operators. It enables hams to experiment with digital communications while maintaining the traditional spirit of radio communication.
WiresX Connect/Disconnect Instructions
Our 440 repeater is WiresX capable. This means that you can connect it to distant repeaters, nodes or even reflectors (such as the America Link, MNWIS, Alabama Link etc.) and enjoy conversations often many thousand of miles apart. Our 2m repeater puts us on the map!
Nevertheless this powerful feature can get in the way of running normal analogue FM NETs if not well understood. Here is what I mean; when our repeater is connected to a distant node it is connected in digital mode only. But our repeater can support both FM (analogue) and C4FM (digital) transmissions as it has been purposely set to AMS mode (automatic). Both transmissions can coexist (in serial mode). So it is very important that when we run our FM only NETs to disconnect our repeater from any distant WiresX nodes first. Equally it is important to let local digital users know that an analogue NET is about to begin.
To make it clear, it is the responsibility of the operator who connected the repeater in the first place to disconnect it when we have a scheduled FM NET or when he/she has finished interacting with other stations or monitoring.

Category or Popular Rooms
-
Many operators connect using a known room ID number.
Step 5: Select the Desired Room
-
Highlight the room you want to join.
-
Press ENT or tap the screen (depending on the radio model).
-
The radio will send a request to connect the repeater/node to that room.
Step 6: Confirm the Connection
-
After a few seconds, the screen should display the room name and ID.
-
You will hear any ongoing transmissions from that room.
-
Your local repeater is now linked to the selected WIRES-X room.
Operating Tips
-
Pause briefly before transmitting after connecting so others can hear the link announcement.
-
When finished, use the disconnect command to unlink the room.
-
Always follow the policies of the repeater owner when linking or unlinking rooms.
Example
An operator using an Yaesu FTM-400DR might:
-
Tune to the local System Fusion repeater.
-
Hold the DX button.
-
Select Room List.
-
Choose the desired room ID.
-
Press Connect.
The repeater will then be linked through WIRES-X to that room.
✅ Good operating practice:
Before connecting a new room, listen for a moment and announce your intention so other users on the repeater know the link will change.
How to Change a WIRES-X Room
Changing rooms on the Yaesu WIRES-X system allows you to switch your local node or repeater to a different digital discussion room. Most Yaesu System Fusion radios follow the same basic procedure, including models such as the Yaesu FTM-400DR, Yaesu FT-991A, and Yaesu FT-5DR.
